Christmas Fashion Stories @West Coast Leather by Designer Lily Marotto

Posted on December 13 2018

It is almost Christmas time. The happiest time of the year, when people get together with their family and friends, help others, shop for gifts, and celebrate the joy of the life. Nothing is better than decorating the Christmas tree, sharing dinner with those you’re closest with, and watching a great movie afterwards. One of the most popular Christmas movies is Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton. Unbelievable that is has been so long, but the world-wide premiere happened 28 years ago on December 6th. The story of a lonely creature who was healed with love, mercy and grace, won the hearts of millions of viewers and stayed there forever. This iconic movie was awarded in many categories at the most prestigious cinematography institutions, including Oscars and Golden Globe.

I would like to bring your attention to the brilliant work of costume designer Colleen Atwood, who won a BAFTA award for this movie. Starting from the first scenes, we meet Edward - the main character of the movie. Edward is wearing a funky, but future-forward leather suit, decorated with many details: rivets, buckles, and metal rings. His costume is exposing his inner feelings - wrapped with a lot of belts, he feels trapped from the rest of the world. Fully covered in leather, showing only parts of his white, pale face, he seems so fragile and detached. Edgy curvilinear cuts on his jacket, reversed seams, torn texture represents how many scars are on his heart, and how many more he will get.

During the movie, Edward changes. He allows “The Avon Lady”, played by actress Dianne Wiest, to change his look, as a sign that he is finally open to a bright future. Wearing a crispy white shirt in combination with suspenders and trousers, covering his leather suit, he is starting a new chapter in his life. Edward is trying to fit in to society, through familiar stereotypical fashion looks. Another important look we should consider in this movie, is the combination of his leather suit with a bomber jacket and a baseball cap. In the final scenes, we see that he no longer needs these covers to express himself. His black leather suit becomes his identity and strength, representing how brave he is.

“The new-era Frankenstein with the happy ending” would forever change the impact on leather- wear. It would bring a lot of influence to the world of fashion, inspire designers and photographers, and elevate leather pieces to best-sellers at many stores.

Nowadays, lots of people choose to show their real identity by picking leather garments. Mixing it with casual style garments, even wearing leather jackets on top of couture dresses. Choosing to be unique, strong, edgy and definitely stylish.
